Week in Review

This sleeping beauty turns 7 months today:

This is Zoë, asleep in the Ergo with sunscreen smudges in her hair
at the Sandy Independence Day Parade - can you believe those lashes?!?!?
It's killing me that she has already figured out crawling (she's not fast yet, but ridiculously mobile). We've given her some solids (just let her try out some fruits and veggies on her own... no rice cereal this  time around, but you should see that girl play with an avocado.) She's a good sleeper, but recently has been enjoying 2-hour nursing sessions from 7-9 at night (and then who knows when throughout the night... I'm half-asleep.) She's delightful and happy and chill and thinks her brother is the sweetest thing in the world.

Like most of you, we've had an exciting week.  Here some of the high-points:

I worked on the campaign... here's a little ditty posted on Friday. Earlier in the week I finally caved and let Danny shave his and Holden's head.
Look at that mischievous grin

So in an odd twist, Zoë now has the second longest hair in our family.

Who needs "Baby Einstein" when you've got a mirror to give constant stimulation?!?

We spent a lot of time with my family and enjoyed a couple of parades on the 4th: our annual East Millcreek Parade where the kids walk away with more candy than Hallow's Eve, and then we joined the WE Team for the Sandy Parade and walked with Scott

The Mangum and Smith Clans sportin' WE tee's
and getting ready to walk the parade route
Yes, I'm happy, but it was H.O.T... Holden rode in the trailer (behind the Landcruiser)
with his cousins, while Danny, Cassandra, Zoë and I passed out literature.
Zoë was a good sport; though did I mention she weighs 22 lbs AND is
100 percentile for height AND weight? Carrying her was my workout for the day...
It took her 20 minutes to make it from one side of the carpet to her furry-friend.

Great week. Love my kids. Thankful for my jobs. Married to an amazing guy.
Life is indeed beautiful.

While the TOM-Cat's Away...

Danny had to work tonight. And by work, I mean "he's entertaining clients at the Jazz game in the suite." Needless to say, he's digging his new job. I am happy about it too...because obviously my husband would do that part for free.

Holden was a little devastated when he found out his Dad had to leave again (once he got home from the office); but we made do.

Dinner consisted of apples, oranges and fresh sliced organic pineapple from Bountiful Baskets (the pasta dish I made was nasty when we tried it at 4 this afternoon, so we went with what we love.)

We read a few chapters of Black Beauty (the adapted illustrated classic in novel format with pictures), and looked at the National Geographic 'hippo' book we borrowed from his Grandma. And then we did a little yoga:

Holden getting into Down Dog

A little 'flamingo' balancing action...
can you see his right leg up behind his knee?

And my favorite kind of yoga...
where I say "Show me your happy face, " and we get this.

Namaste.

A New Partnership in the Making - get it, "make"-ing?

Is it harder to take a pregnant woman seriously in the business world?
I suddenly understand why Palin waited seven months to let people know she
was preggers. Though, I don't know how you keep it a secret when you’re
that far along... I'd hate everyone thinking I was just fat.
I just noticed that in the corporate world (and it’s most likely my own past-biases as well),
that’s it’s hard to think of someone as the terminator when they’re carrying a child… it’s more like they’re “the nurturer.” Nothing wrong with that - just an observation.

Danny and I started our hypnobirthing classes last night. It was such a great feeling to be surrounded by people who share a similar view of labor and delivery that we have (I can only imagine it’s what attending a College Democrats of America meeting would be like at UC Berkeley.) We learned a lot. Danny said he’s glad we “do” yoga – because then it doesn’t seem as weird.

In other news, my pretties! Suite Spots (Version 2.0) is going to be
featured on Make and Takes!!! I know, crazy right? You may be thinking
to yourselves, what would a left-wing, hippie ideologue like moi possibly be
doing with the world's greatest craft-blog? (Some may even be wondering
what ideologue means--fair enough). But, I've got an "in."
I'm going to postpone my progressive rhetoric (yes, of course I know I get on
the soap-box) views for a post or two and focus on another of my great
loves (no, not Burberry Handbags, silly) but yoga!!!

Make and Takes is having me as a guest blogger, and I'm going to write a
little ditty about pre-natal yoga/being a yoga mama/just basically how
to be all-around awesome (ok, maybe not so much the last one, but we'll
 see how it goes).
I'm pretty stoked about this because I haven't written for the masses
since they pulled the Delta Connection SkyWest Magazine off of planes,
months ago... My column ("suite spots") still appears in the United
Express version occasionally, but there just doesn't seem to be the
advertising support for my stuff lately (I know, travesty... Right!?!)

So this is uber exciting!!!! The actual date of my debut hasn't been
determined... I need to write the piece, get a yoga pose pic taken and a
couple of other things need to fall in line first... But it's in the
works, so I'll keep you posted on the date!!! Also, I think by
vocalizing it here, it holds me a little more accountable for getting
things in gear - you know? Kind of like having a sponsor in a 12-step
program (you share with your sponsor what's going on in your life to keep you
 accountable.)

Additionally, I have a couple of zits on my face that rival
the size of my baby-bump....(can you say PREGNANCY ACNE?!?!) You may think I'm exaggerating, but you
have obviously not seen my chin/forehead lately. Swanky said she was going to start charging rent for the prime real-estate her little ditties were taking up on her face. I get it… and I’m feeling the same way.

Last thing – we got those double-pane energy efficient windows installed in the rest of our home this week. Besides being the right thing to do for the planet (it’s a delightful but old home, so hence…a total energy “suck”); but besides the green thing, and making the home much quieter (you can hardly hear our neighbors Harley in the morning)… they look beautiful and make the house feel like we’ve totally upgraded. Now if we could just do something about the pink sink in the “master” bathroom.

Barack the Vote!
Ssm

*Oh crap! One last thing (if you’re even still reading I’m really surprised!), but I’ve been all stressed at work about the 2008 Recruiter Summit I was hosting for the different department movers and shakers about Recruitment and where things were going with our company, and the economy, plus our affirmative action plan (whether you like it or hate it, an AAP is required by law when you’re a company the size of SkyWest). It went great!! My team all flew (some from Denver and another from LA); and it was like 45 minutes before the meeting and I kept thinking I needed to be stressed about something… but there was nothing to be stressed about because they had really taken care of everything. It was such a great feeling, and I’m so glad it’s over with!!! LONG DAY!

Sleeping Woes and Belly Pictures

So I am not a morning person… but apparently when your “ute” (not my BCS buster team, but my anatomy) is the size of a soccer ball… it affects my sleep patterns. Moms already know this. Dads may be aware of it.

I kept thinking my pregnancy was near perfect because I only had “morning sickness” one actual morning .. any other time I lost my lunch (or dinner); well it was really just Holden telling me he doesn’t enjoy processed foods and the Crown Burgers French fries would have to wait until après nursing. (Btw, did you know that the average age for babes to get off-the-teet world-wide is like four years old?!?!?!? That’s craziness… I hope this recession doesn’t force us to tap into our food storage and Holden to have to be hooked-on-boobics until then.) I kid.

OK, so it’s like 5-something in the morning. I’m not usually up at this time, but like I said, sleep escapes me these days.

I’ve missed you people. It’s been more than a wek since we last chatted(Veep Debate - yawner, except the SNL spoof -- and another Presidential debate (need to finish watching), and since we don’t have much time (and it’s hard to have a real conversation via blog) I’ll just tell you about me. ;)

This week:

I celebrate my 9 year anniversary with SkyWest Airlines. A year and a half of that I collected business cards as a flight attendant from cheesy men for who for some reason thought that I wanted them to take me out. What is it with men? You’re friendly to them and all of the sudden they think you want them?!?!

SkyWest has been a pretty cool gig for me and my fam. The flight benefits have obviously been great (New York, San Francisco, DC and a host of state-side gems… plus Tokyo, Paris, Switzerland, Mexico… pretty solid). I’ve carried the Olympic flame on a plane to Alaska – (sadly, I couldn’t see Russia from Juneau --guess I’m not qualified to be Vice President.)

I’ve written magazine articles, columns, stayed in cool B&Bs, been to film festivals, conferences and made friends around the world. I’ve built advertising campaigns, taken 4am phone calls from CNN (as a newlywed- eek!) and been treated to cuisine around the country so I’d “say something nice” about them in our mag. Not too shabby. So thanks SkyWest – who knew I was loyal enough to stick around this long?

Also, this week, Holden turns 25 weeks in the womb (January is coming soon!!!). It’s time to bite the bullet and get some belly picture posted. I did mention my uterus is the size of a soccer ball right? And even though my son weighs less than 2 lbs, it is crazy how much “growth” has happened in the past month and a half!!!

So camera 1, camera 2. (Don;t get excited... this is NOT what I currently look like...

Here I am (a month and a half ago) in my yoga gear up in Upstate Utah (aka Eden, Ogden Valley) with Danny . We did topless yoga that morning, but I didn’t think those pictures were really appropriate for this thing. I mean, you and I are close… but we’re not THAT close, eh?

Now...fast forward a month and a half. We went to some benefit concert/dinner for the Utah Chamber Artists on Monday night for family night and here I am trying to do my best red carpet with my lovely lady lumps. Black is slimming, but even it can’t hide the truth from a side view!

There you have it...

Holden must know I'm talking about him... He just kicked me. I think the kid wants some OJ.

C'est tout!

GREAT NEWS!!!! And graduation pictures!

Things we are celebrating at the suite-mangum/mangum house (not necessarily in order of importance):

  • Danny's swanky new job with Zions! Some of you have heard us talk about this opportunity... and just a couple of months ago we were thinking it wasn't going to happen as the timing was just not seeming to be there. He had got a great offer from First Utah Bank, but Zions was where he wanted to be, and yesterday he got the call... the offer... and accepted!  He starts on June 9th.  I'm so proud of him!!!!
  • King bed, yo! Danny's family (mom & dad and aunt & uncle) bought this swanky pad in upstate-Utah (Eden in Ogden Valley) and asked if we'd be willing to trade out our Queen bed for the joint and replace it with their King bed... um, HELLO!?!?!  Twist my arm?  Ok, yeah... don;t even need to think about it.  So Monday we're going to hit the memorial day white sales and pick up some 800 thread-count linens!!! Hollah!!!
  • Yoga a go-go. Well, I finally got my paperwork completed and have officially applied for Flow Yoga's Teacher Training program.  It starts July 7 and is a month-long 200-plus hour "intensive" that if completed successfully means I would be a certified yoga instructor. I haven't been accepted yet, but we're anticipating a positive response. I'll need to be away from my official job at SkyWest during this time... so there's a lot of pieces that need to fall into place, but I'm super excited about this new opportunity.
  • We got the house! That's right!!!!  The pad that we've been living in (basement-status since we relocated to the East bench early this year) is going to be ours!  They took our offer, and paperwork will be processed this week.  I can hardly believe it.  Of course, I must make note that this whole deal wouldn't be possible without help from our families. We're so blessed...There are so many memories in this home for me. It was my grandparents.... in fact, we even lived here when I was a wee little tot for just over a year when my grandparents were serving a mission in Montana. I lived across the street, and down the street around the corner...I love this piece of property... and am so thrilled we are back to the neighborhood of my childhood!
  • "I is now a GRAD-U-IT!"  OK, not so much me (well, I think Danny and I figured out I had actually graduated with my bachelors two years before he graduated from High school... man, am I a cougar or what?!?!?!)  Anyway, he is now officially a graduate from the U of U -- with a bachelor of Arts in Economics and a minor in business.  I am so proud of him.  I think I was more excited for him to graduate that I was for myself!  (Actually, I wasn't really excited to graduate. I was only 21 and would've stayed studying for years in the safe-walls of institutionalized learning as long as they would've let me... but the $$$$ was not there.)  So, please enjoy these pics from Danny's big day earlier this month.
Below: Danny's Dad, the grad and Princess Di
(oh, wait... that's my mother-in-love Stevie.  Doesn't she have
a striking resemblance to "the people's princess"?

Below: Three generations of Mangum men.  Danny's grandpa Garth used to teach (head of the dept of Economics at the time, actually)  at the U.  While we were there, all of these professors and the dean of the Social Sciences came up to talk to him and shake his hand.
It's pretty cool to be part of a family
that's so amazing and well respected.

Below: The Suites and Us. Do I look tan?
I got a spray-on tan earlier that day that my husband thinks
smells like teriyaki sauce -- nice!

Below:Danny just chillin' ... wishing his wife would stop
 yelling at him to "Smile!!!"

Below: the greatest picture of Garth Mangum possibly ever taken.  To the left, his wife and Danny's grandma -- Marion (she's hilarious... and also has the same name as my college town in Indiana, so we've got a connection.)  To your right... barbara.
I could not adequately explain the dynamics of this woman in one post-- she's hilarious and I love her: we'll leave it at that. (Oh, and Barbara is Princess Di's mom)

Below: Um, if you don't know who this is...
why do you read this post?

Below: Barbara and the grad... Every year Danny and Barbara
go shopping for his B-day and do a lunch date.
I LOVE that I am married to a man who has
lunch dates with his g-ma.  It warms my heart.

***Danny says he likes this post because he is the star.  I like it too... and for the very same reasons***

Also, did you know that neither of us like hot fudge on our brownies and ice cream?  If that doesn't prove we're soul-mates, I don't know what would.  Also, neither of us have showered today... but all that proves is that we're dirty hippies... well, maybe just dirty. ;)

Have a great night!  We're counting our many blessings this evening, and it feels great!  We could go on forever... but I've heard complaints form my sister that my posts are already too long... so I'm shutting it down now. ;)

Namaste.

I wrote this on the plane Monday night...

So I'm walking onto the aircraft and the gentlemen in row 5 seat C is talking on the phone... Nothing new, I see businessmen, moms, teens, tweens, etc., yappin' away on mobile devices all of the time (well, teens and tweens are mostly txting, but that's another issue.)

The thing is, Mr. Big-shot 5C is going off on someone about "get me the numbers" and "send them over a-sap"....First of all, anytime someone says "get me the numbers a-sap" I want to laugh... No one in business really says this, do they?

Isn't that something middle management says to sound important?

I'm being judegemental; but it was really hard to take 5C seriously because:

A) he was in a baggy tank muscle tank with 150 extra lbs of fat (not that I'm one to point the finger as far as body mass index is concerned... if you missed my post on flenser's, keep reading below for past entries)

B) his upper body was entirely covered in tattoos (again, can I really point the finger when I've got a mark of shame on my lower left naval? For the record, yes I was young, yes I was stupid, yes I regret it, and no, President Hinckley hadn't given the official outright "no tatoo" speech... yet.)

C) 5C's head was shaved... Hey, bald is beautiful and all, but when you're sporting tats across the majority of your visable body, you look a lot more "neo-nazi" than clean shaven...

Anyway, it just made me think.... Hmmm, I'm really judgemental, and someone better get me the numbers on that project, stat!!!

ps. My sister is an American Idol fiend... She loves that David Archeltta kid (sp?) Anyway, I hate the show... everything except for Carrie Underwood's legs and the fact that Randy used to be in the band Journey (that's street cred, man). But the whole thing is a little too "1984" for me.

** Also day # "whatever" of low-carb-want-to-kill-myself-I-miss-my-bread-and-cookies-but-I'm-still-not dieting-continues... keep me in your prayers.

Thanksgiving Work and Rewards (from Sabrena Suite-Mangum)

Happy turkey day everyone. I took the last two days off from work; which means I’ve only spent a couple of hours on the phone and email for work. ;)

There’s a lot to be thankful for. . . Danny’s the first that comes to mind. It was his first Thanksgiving with our family (we spent last years with the Mangums). It was actually super cool this year because the whole entire Suite posterity made it to Saint George. All three of my sisters, plus husbands and children. It was a full table and uber fantastic.

Some quick thoughts before I move onto the “email of the week,” and a short video of the neice and nephew.

I'm not sick anymore . . . I know it seems like I'm sick a lot. . . but I'm seriously a pretty healthy person. I just need to get my chakras aligned, or something.

My nephew thought the first prophet of the LDS church’s name was Joseph Suite-Smith (my sister also hyphenates).

Kids can start snoring as early as 2 (mostly this is caused from boogies though)

Cassandra is a size 2/4 because she’s a workout queen AND because she never eats sugar

It’s nice to wear stretchy pants on THXgiving

The Sound of Music still makes me cry (I wish it was because I think musicals are so painful, but I think it has a lot to do with my hormone levels)

Remember the “procreate in 2008” post? I’m thinking we’re moving that timeline a little later in the year (like start “thinking” about it late summer, early fall. . . so no one hold your breath ok?

I have a facebook, myspace, Linked In AND a blog account . . . and this is pretty much the only one I know how to use. But feel free to friend request me, because I at least know how to say “yes.”

PS. My brother in law Dave just got into Med School in Eerie Pennsylvania – they’re looking at a DARLING 2200 sq foot home for $99,900. Seriously, who can by a home for under 100,000?????

OK, moving on . . .

I don’t know if it’s legal to write this stuff; but here’s one of my favourite emails from this week at work. . . Our Communications Manager was throwing some ideas around for a new online forum they’re looking into. I’ve edited a few things to protect the innocent. . . otherwise, enjoy the antics of moi e mes amies.

Thank you for your collaboration!

Well, Board Room Briefs makes me think about [our Executive’s] underwear . . . Which doesn’t thrill me at all. ;)

I like INSight.

In the Know is nice but a little boring . . .

Exclusive is pretty good; but a little too sensational I think.

And The D.L. is totally hip.

I vote for the D.L. or INSight . . . Thank you for asking.

YES UTAH!!! We voted NO!!!

What a friggin great day to be alive (especially if you're a democrat!)

First of all, Ref 1 (aka subsidized tax break for the rich to send their kids to private school) defeated!

Second: Another Dem for SLC's mayor! Yep, Danny and I voted for Becker. . . did I mention he sat a few rows in front of us at that session of LDS Conference that we went to? And I don't even think the dude's mormon. PS. That is one thing (of many) that I adore about living in the downtown SLC

Also, Danny and I had a romantic evening . . . we ate dinner at the Roof Restaurant overlooking the Salt Lake Temple.. . it was soooo awesome!!! We were celebrating another tremendous day at work! They have a great buffet; and they even bring you those fresh hot buttery rolls to die for from the Lion House. . . . I gorged on two varieties of chocolate cake, some key lime pie, a tart that wasn't that great and about 10 different offerings of cream . . . whipped pototates with butter/cream; pasta with butter cream sauce, strawberries with whilled cream . . . good thing I've been trying to gain a little weight lately, eh?

Man, am I tired.

But good news! I got to hit a yoga class last night -- so my chakras are feeling much more aligned.

I'm diggin' on my job. i get to do so many different things. I was reflecting back to my first month of training at SkyWest and I remembered thinking that I wanted to be the person that gave the new hire orientation . . . that told employees all about SkyWest's travel benefits, and talked all about our culture . . . and I remember thinking that was coolest job ever. . .

And now i do that as part of my job!!!! So crazy.

I think I may be taking a business trip to Chicago next week. . . I'm hoping I get a chance to track down some Gino's East pizza . . . I'm trying to convince him to take a "business trip" with me; but his schedule is a little complicated.

And the Suite-Smith's (Cassandra and co) are relocating to Cincinatti for a year. I told Tatum and Max (Sassa's two kids) I would miss them when they moved. (Max is REALLY excited about going to Ohio ... the kid must be a Buckeyes fan). Anyway, I told him I would miss him; he said I would be coming with him... aren't kids fabulous.

Well, sorry this is kind of boring. . . I'll try to be funny later this week. . .

Love you - namaste.

Tuesdays with Sabrena -- Part II; Because I couldn't think of a catchier title

Picture of the Day. . . me and my Tatum at the reflection pond at El Tempo. Just as a side note, when I asked her and her little brother Max what they liked better. . . the temple or Costco? Good News, they both responded the temple. :)

Random Thoughts I probably shouldn't share with the masses:

* My feet have smelled a lot like apple cidear vinegar lately

* I really enjoy my job (that's a weird thing to say, right?) Seriously, I kicked-ace and took names at my meeting today. . . I shouldn't brag, but it felt great to be so prepared!

* Sometimes I wonder if I'm a figment of someone else's imagination

* I've already started listening to Christmas Music in my car (and I sang Christmas Carols to Danny Sunday night in bed)

* There's this girl in my Monday yoga class that I "compete" with in my head. Like who has the lowest Warrior I or who does the most chatarunga (I know I spelled that wrong). Anyway, that COMPLETELY defeats the purpose of yoga . . . I need to "stay on my mat"

*I taped the number "135" on my scale in the bathroom, because I was tired of seeing 150+ pounds on the scale (this has actually done wonders for my self esteem too!)

Have an uber fabulous Tuesday.
For Halloween I think I'll dress up as someone who's mentally sound... costume ideas?

P.S. And a special hello to my friends in cyber-space from Parsons...I'm sending you fabulous little law ladies an extra dose of Suite-Chi. ;) Danny says you're out there, but there's no way to really know . . .

Friday, March 30, 2007

I'm getting a new job (aka being downsized, or not?)

WHOA! What a freakin' day people! Who knew that I would find such solace in my web log (web+ log = blog). Word on the street is that I actually have a fan (or two). I mean, as of this afternoon, I could confirm that two people actually had read my blog. I feel like Gidget: "They like me, they really like me."

Anyway, my temperament is somewhere between tears and joy. I think it's kind of like being in an LDS testimony meeting and knowing that it's your turn to get up. You're all nervous and jittery on the inside; you're trying to hold back your sobs and sniffles, with sniffles predominating, because you'll feel (not to mention sound) like a complete idiot if you're crying from the stand. And you're not really sad; you're confused. Because if you're so happy about something, why is there a lump in your throat?

The lump I've got in my throat is like unto the one I had in Junior High when my junior high crush "broke up" with me. Oh man was I tormented! I mean, talk about puppy love. I was like a freaking German Shepard with that crush. Thankfully, he married one of my better friends and I found my prince charming; so naturally the lump went away . . . but today the lump returned.

At this moment, Danny's in the room next door listening to Death Cab and I can hear the lyrics to "Heaven and Hell" muffled through the door. "If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks, I'll follow you into the dark . . ."

How poetic, I'm kind of moving into the dark. . . back to the job, right?

So, I'm being handed a new position. Basically my employer is giving me this fabulous job where they hand picked all the things about my job that make me happy and bring me joy and let me be creative . . .and I don’t have to be on call anymore, or answer questions to idiot reporters form Utah Valley, or talk about Boise passengers (have you read the story yet?) Seriously, google my name and try and find a reference to "Sabrena Suite-Mangum" that doesn't include a reference to a man and his beloved 'sick sack.' (That comment may come back to haunt me.)

Thank goodness for the delete button . . . although I'll leave it be until I get hate mail from someone. (Ew, if I get hate mail from this blog that means someone is actually reading it!!! And I've struck a chord!!! Usually I reserve that talent for discussions on politics at the dinner table . . . or with people from Utah Valley).

So no more crisis communications, or seriously intense emergency response responsibilities. . . no more media relations (which is weird, because I'm really thir resident expert on the subject matter). So it is odd, but to be honest . . . it's a good thing. My personal life is going to reap the benefits . . .(Shhh, don't tell but I'm kind of out growing that piece anyway.) So I keep telling myself, that this is a good thing. . .

Although, I don't know my new title. I'm going to lobby for PR and Community Relations Goddess; but I'm not sure our Human Relations Management System has a job code for it yet. . . but it's worth a shot. Maybe, "Really important talker" I mean who wouldn't love a business card with that title?

Sabrena Suite-Mngum
Really Important Talker
Company Name Here
ssuitemangum@gmail.com

Actually, now that I think about it . . there are a few other titles I'd like.

Sabrena Suite-Mangum
Director - Emotional Thinness

Sabrena Suite-Mangum
Hipper than your average Short-Bus Rider

Sabrena Suite-Mangum
Lead Shopping Philanthropist

Maybe I should open this up to our vast blogging-audience. Why don’t you come up with my new title? My job description includes everything from recruitment marketing to community relations, philanthropic responsibilities and promotional and trade vendor, stuff.

So I'm putting it out to you cyber-space . . . Name my job title!
The winner receives something really delicious like my vast collection of missing sock matches. You could make a quilt with those things.

OK friends. . . I'm feeling much better. The lump is practically gone. It's moved into my stomach and may someday manifest itself as an ulcer, but until then, I just drink a thirst-quenching "Pepto" smoothie and look forward to the weekend.

In honor of LDS Conference Weekend, I'll bend it like the Mo-Tab on a Saturday afternoon session: "God be with you 'til we meet again."

post script. There are a lot of references to Mormon culture in this entry. Can you find all 7? Don't forget the hidden reference where we worked in the scripture language "like unto"...Thankfully, out two readers are either a) Mormon or b) jack Mormon, but really interested in moving towards Jill their visiting teacher.
